Meet Our Founder

Laura Curtis is the founder of SMC+ and a fractional CMO working with deep tech, biotech, and agrifood scaleups. She set up SMC+ after noticing that the majority of Series A scaleups she encountered had no marketing function at all, and built a free, volunteer-run expert clinic to close that gap.

Her own work centres on the kind of marketing problem most founders don't know they have yet: translating genuinely complex science into language investors and commercial audiences can actually engage with. She's led a full investor-readiness programme for a precision fermentation biotech ahead of a Series A raise, building the investor narrative, strategic positioning, and milestone communications from scratch, and designed and delivered a six-month marketing curriculum for one of Europe's largest agrifood accelerator programmes, supporting over 40 founders through everything from brand foundations to investor messaging and campaign planning.

Across nearly two decades in B2B marketing and communications, including senior roles at a global packaging corporation and an international communications agency, her focus has stayed consistent: building genuine trust and credibility for technical founders, rather than chasing volume or vanity metrics. SMC+ exists because she believes founders shouldn't have to learn this the hard way, or alone.

SMC+ runs through a network of volunteer contributors based in Brussels and Cambridge.

The Brussels collective, where SMC+ began, brings deep connections across the Belgian and wider European startup scene; the Cambridge network is building the same foundations in one of the world's most concentrated deep tech and biotech ecosystems.

Members get the benefit of both: perspectives, introductions, and expertise drawn from two genuinely different innovation cultures, rather than a single regional view. As SMC+ grows, that dual footprint is by design, not a step away from where it started.
